Abstract

The invention comprises homopolymers of N-vinyl-1,2,4-triazole and its copolymers with polymerizable ethylenically - unsaturated compounds. The polymerization is expediently carried out in the presence of radical-forming or ionic catalysts, for example peroxidic compounds, azo-compounds and mineral acids or Lewis acids. Traces of certain metals, for example iron, copper, titanium or silver, may be used to activate the catalysts. The polymerization may also be initiated by octinic light. In the formation of copolymers, acrylonitrile, acrylic esters, butadiene, vinyl esters and vinyl chloride may be used as the co-monomers. The polymerization can be carried out by bulk-, solution-, suspension- or emulsion-polymerization.ALSO:The invention comprises N - vinyl - 1,2,4-triazole. It may be prepared by reacting 1,2,4-triazole with ethylene chlorhydrin to form N - (b - hydroxyethyl) - 1,2,4 - triazole, replacing the hydroxy group by chlorine and dehydrochlorinating the resultant N-(b -chloroethyl) -1,2,4-triazole. The hydroxy group may be replaced by chlorine by the use of known chlorinating agents such as phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus pentachloride or thionyl chloride. The elimination of the hydrogen halide is preferably carried out by treating in anhydrous media with alcoholic solutions of metal hydroxides.
