1,274,786. 3,5 - Di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenylethyl substituted bicyclic azoles. CIBAGEIGY A.G. 2 March, 1970 [3 March, 1969], No. 9976/70. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] The invention comprises compounds of Formula (1), where R represents H or a halogen atom or a C 1-12 alkyl, C 2-4 cyanoalkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy, phenyl, phenyl-(C 1-4 alkyl), CF 3 , or -(CH 2 ) p COE group (where E is a hydroxy, C 1-18 alkoxy, optionally substituted C 1-18 alkylamino, optionally substituted hydrazino, or morpholine group and p is 0, 1 or 2); n is 1, 2 or 3; X 1 represents -O-, -S-, -NH- or -NQ 1 - (where Q 1 represents a C 1-18 alkyl group); Y 1 represents an up to C 4 branched alkyl radical and Z 1 represents H or an up to C 4 branched alkyl radical; their preparation by heating a compound (8) with an O-aminoaryl compound (9), where B represents a carboxylic acid, chloride, ester, amide or nitrile group or an aldehyde group and X 2 represents -O-, -S-, or -NQ 2 - (where Q 2 represents H or a C 1-4 alkyl group) to 100-250‹ C. under N 2 in the melt or in a solvent inert to the reagents, optionally with the use of a catalyst for the elimination of water and where Q 2 differs from Q 1 , replacing Q 2 by Q 1 and, if desired, where R represents a group-(CH 2 ) p COE, converting one value of E into another by known methods; and a process for stabilizing organic compounds against oxidation (in particular vinyl and vinylidene chloride) by incorporating uniformly therein compounds (1).
