Abstract

Moulded thermoplastic articles are provided with printed labels by leading continuous thermoplastic film into the mould daylight for lamination to the surface of the moulding. The (transparent) film either carries preprinted paper or film labels fixed at appropriate intervals to the underside of the film by electrostatic adhesion. Used film is of biaxially oriented polystyrene or, pref. polypropylene, opt. laminated or coated to provide greater protection against gas or steam. Esp. for applying labels to the lids of relatively large boxes as used for commercial wholesale or trade-sized packs retailed through supermarkets or factors. Requires much less extension of the mould-open cycle period than system for manual or automatic insertion of individual labels. Avoids complications of using hot-melt or adhesive-bonded labels, including the risk of inducing a matt or "orange-peel" surface texture due to interaction with the adhesive. The separate labels are protected from damage.
