Abstract

A load indicator for seat belts indicates the force to which the seat belt has been exposed by its permanent deformation. The indicator element has the shape of a serrated washer which is inserted between the bolt through the anchor brackets on the car chassis and the bore of the fitting at the end of the belt. The thickness and the number and size of the serrations of the washer are designed to acquire a permanent deformation at a load exceeding 2500 N. Pref. material for the washers is regenerated ABS resin or polyoxymethylene. This displays the force to which a seat belt has been subjected in an accident so that it can be exchanged in case of excessive strain.
