Abstract
The reciprocating engine which uses a fluoro-carbon vapour as the working fluid has inlet valves with a variable period of opening. This is achieved by an overhead camshaft which can be moved axially. The cams have helical grooves so that the axial motion changes the timing of their operation. The camshaft is linked with a centrifugal governor so that as engine speed increases the amount of vapour admitted per stroke is reduced with a consequent increase in efficiency. The axial motion of the camshaft can also be effected manually. The engine operates on the Rankine Cycle, and preferably uses octafluorocyclobutane or octafluorocyclopropane.
