Abstract

1493246 Hydraulic tappets ROLLS-ROYCE MOTORS Ltd 19 Aug 1975 [22 Aug 1974] 36850/74 Heading F2K [Also in Division F1] Valve lift may be varied in an I.C. engine in dependence upon engine speed or load, by providing in the valve-operating gear between a cam-shaft 5 and a valve 4, an hydraulic tappet 1, 2, 3 and a plunger 7 to vary the tappet length (by forcing oil between parts 1, 2) operated by an additional cam-shaft 9. The hydraulic tappet 1, 2, 3 may be located directly between the cam-shaft 5 and valve stem 4, or may be located between a cam-shaft and a push-rod (not shown). To operate the plunger 7 the additional cam-shaft 9 may be axially shiftable to bring a cam 8 into engagement therewith. Several plungers (not shown) and severed cam surfaces or a complex cam surface can be employed to provided incremental changes in valve lift with increasing engine speed. Alternatively a lever 27 (Fig. 4) may operate a plunger 25 from the cam-shaft 31, the lever 27 having a variable fulcrum, the position of which is determined by engine speed or load by moving a further lever 30.
