Abstract

The engine operates on a refrigerant vapour produced by a solar heater but can also run as a normal steam engine. It has a single acting piston (2) moved in one direction by the vapour and returned by a spring. Vapour from the solar heater is admitted through a normal sliding valve through which it is also discharged back to the heater. The valve is moved by vapour admitted to and released from it through passages in a sleeve projecting below the cylinder. Flow through these is regulated by grooves in a stem projecting below the piston and sliding with a tight fit in the sleeve.
