Abstract

The transmission unit has a pump rotor on the driving shaft delivering fluid into a motor rotor on the driven shaft. Between the two rotors (1, 3) is a set of movable guide vanes (6) in a passage. In a first position the vanes do not impede the fluid emerging from the driving rotor, while in the second position they deflect it, causing the driven rotor to rotate in the opposite direction. A control can be included for direct drive between the shafts via a self-synchronising mechanism, and the unit can be used for marine propulsion in conjunction with a non-reversing engine.
