Abstract

Drive shaft (1) and vanes (2) impel the fluid along path (7) through stator (5) to driven vanes (4) and output shaft (3), the path being completed by stator (6). The stator and vanes (8) are made of flexible plastics material connected rigidly or continuously through hubs (11, 12). Holes (13) through the leading and trailing sections of the vanes are provided so that rings of actuator shafts (14), when rotated about the axis of the machine, will deform these parts of the blades to the correct angle to match the flow direction for the particular input/output speed ratio required. Various methods of driving the actuator are described and in some cases only one set of stator blades need be made deformable.
