Abstract

A solar energy trap comprises a layer of insulating material featuring longitudinal ribs which support a shallow fluid circulation envelope shaped to follow the surface profile of the supporting layer. The support also carries a glass cover to obtain a greenhouse effect in the chamber containing the fluid circulation envelope. Pref. the fluid circulation envelope is made of two pressed metal sheets, welded together round the borders and also spot welded interfacially to create chicanes to make the fluid flow in a surpentine pattern. The low volume of the envelope increases heat capture efficiency and minimises circulation losses. The exposed face of the envelope is pref. coated with a UV-stable black paint. The panels are light wt. for use alone or in series on roofs, beside windows, etc.
