Abstract

A mechanism for producing a reciprocating motion with an increased dwell time at each end of the stroke uses a crank and connecting rod to drive a toothed rack mounted in a linear guide. The teeth of the rack engage a pinion which drives a second crank and connecting rod to produce a reciprocating motion of the slider in the guide. Because the rotational speed of the pinion is relatively slow at each end of its angular oscillation, the slider is effectively stationary for a significant interval at each end of its own stroke.
