Abstract

986,482. Converting rotary into reciprocating motion; variable-ratio gear. C. C. B. LEWIS. April 7, 1961 [Jan. 7, 1960], No. 555/60. Headings F2D, F2K and F2Q. A variable-ratio gear includes a power transmission comprising a rotary input member, a reciprocatory output member and an intermediate pivoted member connecting the parts, the intermediate member oscillating back-andforth about a line in the plane of but perpendicular to the line of motion of the reciprocatory output member. In one form, a shaft 11, Fig. 1, in a variable-ratio gear drives through cranks 19, a connecting rod 31 and an intermediate lever 33 to a driven member 29 which reciprocates along guides 30, a secondary motion being imposed upon the driven member 29 from the shaft 11 through a gear train 18, 20, 24, cranks 28, and a connecting rod 37 also connected to the lever 33. The arrangement is such that the velocity of the slide 29, with a constant speed of the shaft 11, is substantially constant over part of its movement. In another form, a shaft 111, Fig. 2a, drives through cranks 119, a connecting rod 131 and a rack 141 meshing a gear-wheel 145 to reciprocate a driven element 146 between guides 130, and a secondary drive is superimposed upon the movement of the driven element 146 from the shaft 111 through gearing 118, 124, a shaft and eccentric 138, a connecting rod 137 and a second rack 143 also meshing the gear-wheel 145. Again, the driven reciprocating element 146 has a substantially constant speed over the greater part of its movement for a constant input speed of the shaft 111. In another construction, a shaft 201, Fig. 3, drives a crank 203 pivoted on a rod 204 telescoping within a hollow rod 206 pivoted at 210 on a driven element 207 reciprocated up-and-down a guide rod 209, a guide sleeve 211 pivoting at 212 slidably supporting the hollow rod 206. It is stated that the output speed of the driven reciprocated element 207 is substantially constant over the greater length of its movement for a constant input speed of the drive shaft 201.
