Abstract

649,307. Converting rotary into reciprocating motion. ORR, W., A. July 22, 1949, No. 20536/48. [Class 80(i)] Gearing for reciprocating a pump plunger B from a rotary shaft DS comprises a sleeve member A supported for rotary movement and having a helical screw connection P with the plunger B which is guided for longitudinal movement only by a key K. In helical screw connection with the sleeve A is an outer sleeve W which also has a certain amount of axial movement relative thereto. On the opposite side of the driving shaft DS is a rotary shaft H having a sleeve W<SP>1</SP> with a helical screwed connection therewith and a certain amount of relative axial movement. The sleeves W, W<SP>1</SP> are provided each with a gear WG co-operating with upper and lower gears DG respectively on the driving shaft DS and each with a sprocket or pulley SP connected by a crossed chain or belt C. The gears DG each have a sector J removed and re-fitted in a diametrically opposite position. If with the parts in the positions shown the shaft DS is rotated to drive the sleeve W in an anti-clockwise direction the sleeve A is also driven thereby with the sleeve W in its upper position with a consequent downward movement of plunger B. On the gap in the upper gear DG reaching the gear WG this drive ceases and the segment J engages the gear WG of sleeve W<SP>1</SP> which is first displaced to its lower position where it is engaged by the lower gear DG of the driving shaft DS. The gear DG then drives sleeve W<SP>1</SP> and shaft H and, through the chain or belt C, the sleeve W of plunger B in the opposite direction to that previously. This results in the sleeve W moving to its lower position on sleeve A and then rotating the latter with consequent movement of the plunger upwards. When the gap in the lower gear DG reaches the gear WG of sleeve W<SP>1</SP> and the sector J engages the gear WG of sleeve W the drive from sleeve W<SP>1</SP> is stopped and both sleeves are returned to their original positions for the operation to be repeated. The sprockets or pulleys SP can be replaced by gears interconnected by idlers to reverse the directions of rotation and the shaft H could also be adapted for reciprocation as another plunger.
