Abstract

The operation of a three train epicycloidal gearbox, described schematically, permits a) linear speed subdivision, b) disconnection and c) reversal of direction of rotation. This control is achieved, without changing internal gear rations, by the use of an auxiliary motor driving the gear frame. Willis's formular is used to calculate the relationship between output speed and frame driving speed for a given input condition. Two of the gear trains are axially aligned with themselves and the auxiliary drive shaft such that the latter can drive the former together.
