Abstract

A continuous length of glass fibre- strip or -thread is wound into a bobbin with longitudinal axis (1). The thread feeder is reciprocated in direction (1) so the wound bobbin forms a cylinder with a thick middle portion (m) of thickness (t) and two tapering ends, each of the latter being a truncated cone ending in a ring cross-section. Each taper forms a protective zone round the bobbin, the two zones extending along the taper to a point where the bobbin thickness is 0.3 t. The bobbin is pref. hardened by drying and held by packing rings outside portion (m) but the packing rings do not touch the ends of the bobbin, i.e. the bobbin ends are surrounded by a protective zone. The packing rings are pref. shaped like a hat with a conical zone fitting inside the bobbin and a rim with a turned-up edge forming a recess into which the bobbin spool or former is inserted.
