A method of making annular bodies comprises winding glass fibre strands impregnated with a hardenable synthetic material, preferably thermosetting, in an annular form, characterized in that short pieces of glass fibre are introduced during the winding, into the former, at an angle to the wound strands. As shown in Fig. 1 the winding former consists of a central cylinder 1 having end flanges and comprising an annular groove of rectangular cross-section open around its periphery. Glass fibre strands 3, consisting of rovings containing a substantial number of separate threads, are impregnated with viscous synthetic material by passage through a bath (not shown) and are wound into the groove by rotation of the former. During winding, small pieces of glass fibres 5 are blown through an elongated nozzle 4 into the former, the fibres lying at right angles to the strands 3, whereby a body of cross-section as shown in Fig. 3 is obtained wherein longitudinal glass fibres 3a derived from strands 3 cross transverse fibres 5a produced from pieces of glass fibre 5. The fibres may be acute to the strands, see Fig. 4 (not shown), and two nozzles oppositely inclined may be used. The former 1 may be polygonal or elliptical instead of circular in transverse section, and the groove need not be rectangular, see Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown), in this case, the nozzle may be rotatable about a vertical axis, so that the fibres can be accommodated in varying widths of the groove. Glass fabric strip 19a... 19d may be included in the body by winding between the strands, the former being stepped as shown. Divided formers may be employed, so that first the body is built up over the full width of the groove, and then only over a portion of it.
