The braided sheath of a mountaineering rope comprises filaments of different colours arranged so that the colour of the sheath changes at least once along the length of the rope. With this arrangement the two halves of the rope can be braided with filaments of different colour whereby the middle of the rope can be readily ascertained. At the boundary between two portions of the rope of different colour the filaments overlap and are braided together.
