Abstract

1,246,906. Covering cores by winding. KOPPERS CO. Inc. 16 April, 1969, No. 19526/69. Heading B8G. [Also in Division D1] A strand of filaments, e.g. of glass, impregnated with a thermosetting resin, is made by passing a plurality of rovings separately through a bath of the resin and thereafter passing the rovings while still wet through a single throatshaped orifice whereby the strand is formed and excess resin is squeezed out. The rovings may be heated and/or subjected to vacuum before and/or after strand formation. The wet strands may be wound on to a rotating mandrel using a reciprocating feeding eye. For a resin of viscosity 2000 cps. the rovings (which may comprise 60 ends each of 204 filaments) may travel at 200 f.p.m. through an orifice of 0À052 inch diameter.
