Abstract

1447112 Moulding POST OFFICE 21 Jan 1974 [6 Feb 1973] 5792/73 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions F2 and H1] Apparatus for manufacturing a waveguide in the form of a tube (see Divisions F2 and H1) includes an elongate mandrel, drive means for moving the mandrel along its axis, means for applying an electrically conductive layer to the mandrel and further means for feeding fibres to the mandrel at fixed circumferential positions around the axis of the mandrel, at least one die through which passes the mandrel, &c., and means for feeding a bonding agent to the die to embed the fibres in the bonding agent. As shown, the apparatus comprises a mandrel 5 in sections connected by spigots and sockets 6 and previously covered with a conductive layer or helix wound from an electrically conducting wire of strip. The mandrel 5 is advanced to the right by driving devices 7 through guides 10 which cover housings 9 of glass fibres. The fibres 9 are laid lengthwise of the mandrel 5 in a layer 11 as it enters a layering apparatus 8. The mandrel 5 passes through a first chamber 13 evacuated via a pipe 14, through die 15, into a chamber 16 to which bonding agent is supplied through a pipe 17. After passing through another die 19, the mandrel 5 with its impregnated layer enters a rotary armature 23 carrying supply reels 21 which wind a helical layer 20 of fibres on top of the layer 11 of longitudinal fibres. Alternatively, the mandrel 5, &c. may pass through two oppositely-rotating armatures which wind two opposite-hand helical layers on top of the longitudinal layer 11, or through a plaiting machine. Subsequently, the mandrel 5, &c. passes through a further chamber 28 to which bonding agent is supplied under pressure, and through a final die 27. While the resin is still wet the waveguide is cut into sections and left on the sections of the mandrel 5 to dry, the mandrel sections subsequently being withdrawn. Alternatively the dies, &c. can be heated to effect cure of the resin while in the apparatus.
