Abstract

Improvements made to the subject of main patent no. 368,028, granted on March 10, 1971, for: "A method of manufacturing an extrusion coating on a core of an electrical conductor" according to which to produce an extruded coating on a member continuous advance braiding as defined above, such improvements comprise making the braided member pass through the core tube of an extrusion machine that applies a continuous coating on the braided member, performing a continuous formed coating treatment thus passing the covered braided member through a hermetically closed chamber at the outlet end of the extrusion machine and containing a fluid medium at pressure higher than atmospheric pressure, injecting fluid under pressure into the core tube, and maintaining said fluid at a pressure that is less than that of the fluid medium in the treatment chamber in such a magnitude that l unlike pressures through the extruded coating in the extrusion orifice it is sufficient to cause the extruded coating to flatten firmly onto the braided member as it exits the extrusion machine, but is insufficient to drive the extruded coating back into along the core tube, where the interstices between the component elements of at least the outermost layer of component elements of the braided member along at least the length of the braided member passing through the extruder are substantially filled with a fluid impervious filler means which forms, in said interstices when the braided member passes within the upstream end of the core tube, a barrier which has no detrimental effect on said component elements of the braided member or on the coating which it has to be extruded on it, and it will allow a longitudinal movement to take place relative of said component elements of the braided member during any flexing of the covered braided member that may subsequently take place.
