Abstract

The equipment forms an artificial wake whose shape, colour and dimensions contrast strongly with the environment, thus allowing lifeboats to be easily spotted by rescuers, particularly from aircraft. It comprises a rectangular strip of cloth, 50m. long x 1m. wide, and of bright fluorescent colour, fixed at each end to a rigid bar forming the base of a triangular hitch. The hitch secures on end of the strip to the lifeboat, and the other to an assembly, acting as a sea anchor, comprising a voluminous inflatable buoy coupled by a long rope to a ballast weight. The weight of the latter is such that, when in water, the buoy is half submerged.
