Abstract

1426995 Launching inflatable lifeboats INTERCONTINENTAL MARINE Ltd 20 June 1974 [26 June 1973] 27414/74 Headings B7A and B7S An inflated lifeboat 10 (or an uninflated lifeboat in a buoyant container) is lashed to a ship's deck by straps 14 and is released automatically as the ship sinks, e.g. by buoyancy forces bursting the fastening 24. A buoy 12 is held by a strap 36 to the transom 30 of the lifeboat, and remains anchored to the sunken ship. The buoy also carries a flashing light 103, radio transmitter 109 and containers of marker dye and shark repellant. The buoy and boat are initially kept together to minimise the likelihood of fouling on rigging, but a trip line 45 about 50 feet long and attached to the sinking ship releases the fastening 42 on the strap 36 so that the buoy and boat float apart but remain connected by a line 125. Where the lifeboat is launched uninflated (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) it is stowed in a container which opens into two halves when the boat is inflated. The boat is automatically inflated by CO 2 when a line connected to the ship is pulled taut. The buoy is as described in Specification 1,416,048, and has a reel carrying an anchoring cable attached to the ship.
