Abstract

A vacuum cleaner has a two stage centrifugal fan driven by an electric motor which is mounted in a cylindrical housing (6). The air drawn through the dust filter by the fan is used to cool the motor. When the motor temp. rises, additional air is drawn in through a port (5) in the housing (6). The port (5) is normally covered by a curved steel spring strip (11) which is riveted to the housing (6). A bimetallic strip (16) which is also riveted to the housing (6) has its other end (17) fitting under the overhanging ends (15) of the steel strip (15). With increasing temperature the end (17) of the bimetallic strip (16) moves out-wards and lifts the spring steel strip (11) clear of the port (5) to allow additional air to flow to the fan.
