Abstract

1292477 Suction cleaners GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 30 June 1970 [17 July 1969] 31644/70 Heading A4F [Also in Division F1] An electric motor and suction fan assembly for a vacuum cleaner comprises an integrally moulded member 46 forming a part 48 of a fan chamber and a part 50 of an electric motor housing separated by an integrally moulded partition 52, a fan 88 including a hub 90 and radially extending blades 94, 96, the fan chamber including an air inlet zone 116 in which air flows freely to both sides of the fan and an air accelerating passage in which two generally spiral air flows are produced as illustrated in Fig. 8, and a diffusing passage 123 leading to an exhaust opening, a substantial part of the diffusing chamber 123 being integrally moulded with the fan chamber. The part 50 is integrally formed with recesses for the commutator brushes 40 of the motor 25 the main body of which is housed in a sheet metal member 80 secured by screws to the part 50. Air is drawn by the fan 88 through a dust bag 28, Fig. 2 (not shown) and a filter sleeve 87 surrounding and slots 82 in the member 80, and over the motor to cool it, and thence through an opening 112, Fig.7 (not shown) in the partition 52 into the fan chamber. If desired a further air inlet opening may be provided in the moulded cover member 104 of the fan chamber which is connected by screws to the moulding 46. The air discharged from the fan chamber via the diffusing chamber 123 is diverted laterally by louvres 128, Fig.3 (not shown) so as not to be directed towards the user of the machine.
