A suction cleaner of the hand type comprises a casing in two parts 10, 30 the part 10 having a tubular protuberance 11 extending therefrom and the parts abutting on a plane located between and parallel to flat side faces of the casing which houses an electric battery operated motor driven fan 14 and a light bulb 37 and has an air inlet around which are disposed bristles 15. The protuberance 11 is formed with a stub pipe 16 leading to a dust bag 17. In the assembled condition the casing parts 10 and 30 are held together by spring tongues 27a on the part 10 engaging in ridges 32 on the part 11, lugs 24 and 39 on the respective parts engaging in recesses 31 and 40 in the parts. A finger piece 20 of an operating switch protrudes through a notch 19 in the casing part 10 and has three positions one of which is the off position and the other two of which respectively starts the fan motor and illuminates the bulb, the latter being aligned with an aperture 36 in the casing part 30. The operating switch and the light bulb are mounted on a bracket comprising a metal sheet 50 secured to a sheet 51 of electrical insulating material, the bracket being detachably secured to the casing part 10. The fan motor 42 is held between the bracket and a shoulder 76 on the casing 10, a disc 75 being freely mounted on the motor shaft for engagement with the shoulder 76 and the motor having a bearing 77 for engagement in a hole 78 in the bracket.
