Abstract
The rudder blade-to-shaft securing flange forming process is intended to minimise metal removal required. It involves setting up a shaft (1) and transition length (10), the oval end of the latter having a vertical major axis. A mould (2) in the shape of the required flange is then built up around the transition length end. Into a layer of electrically conducting slag at the bottom of this are lowered suitably shaped submerged arc type electrodes. The flange is then built up by causing the electrodes to melt and re-solidify. Cooling is provided around the mould as necessary.
