Abstract

Ingots of a required size are formed in a cooled ingot mould by remelting consumable electrodes under electro conductive slag and esp., after disconnecting the source of current to the electrode, the slag is evacuated from the head of the ingot, pref. by siphoning, by immersing a plug into the slag or by draining. The process reduces the time for cooling the ingot to the cooling time of the metal alone and reduces the manual work in removing solidified slag from the top of the ingot.
