Abstract

The starter motor pinion is turned via a friction clutch and moved axially along a course threaded section of the drive shaft by a magnet to engage fully with the starter ring before the starter motor is energised by a relay. The drive shaft has a second coarse thread section carrying the first part of a gear coupling unit. The second part of the coupling unit has teeth to engage with the first part. The gears are kept out of mesh by centrifugal force dependent balls located in the coarse thread section. Should the pinion fail to fully engage, the forwards thrust of the magnet continues and causes the gear coupling to move axially and turn the shaft.
