Abstract

A circular knitting machine for producing jersey knit has a needle cylinder with needles controlled by cams to move vertically to co-operate with horizontal needles also operated by cams. The number of horizontal needles is half the number of cylinder needles and a cam selector mechanism is provided to operate alternate cylinder needles to produce the wales. Cam mechanisms are provided to move the cylinder and horizontal needles to gather yarn supplied to the respective needles from separate yarn feed mechanisms, and a control cam assembly is provided to ensure that the horizontal needles co-operate with those cylinder needles not used for knitting the wales to effect the transfer of stitches and so produce a jersey knit. Using elasticated yarn a jersey knit with good stretch characteristics can be produced.
