Abstract
Solar energy capture panels ('insolation' panels) involve a liquid heat transfer medium (water) cascading under gravity down sloping roof top panels, where the water passes through shallow passages beneath a transparent cover and is spread over the base of the passages by a draped flexible plastic film. Prefd. polyvinyl fluoride used for heat capture for water or space heating systems, pref. involving thermostat controlled pumps to interrup the cascade if the panels are too cool, e.g. snow bound. The spreading of the water film and the restriction of the depth of the water layer (to about 0.5 mm) by the draped film enhances the efficiency of heat collection by the water (a) from impinging radiation, (b) by transfer from the heat absorbant surface over which the water cascades. The water surface is covered by the film, inhibiting heat loss by evaporation. Simpler, cheaper and less prone to blockage than very shallow passages made with rigid walls for gravity or force fed cascades.
