Abstract

To increase the resistance of outdoor insulators to chipping, particularly in the vulnerable region at the edges of the sheds, they are made with a core of material having high electrical properties which is then covered with an outer layer or armouring of insulating material with high mechanical properties. The high strength mechanical material may, for example, be confined to the outer diameter of the sheds. alternatively the high electrical strength material may be embedded, random fashion, in the mechanically strong material. A version of the latter design would be fibres or mat embedded in a strong synthetic resin.
