Abstract

The car engine (1) is cooled by the radiator (2) and is connected to it by pipes (3, 4). The water circulation is maintained by the pump (5). Any gases which are forced out of solution from the: water as the temperature rises flow along the pipe (22) into the de-gassing tank (7). The gases then flow out of the tank (7) along the pipe (14) into the expansion tank (8) and out through the relief valve (27). When the water expands due to heat, it also flows through the de-gassing tank (7) into the expansion tank (8) but returns to the radiator (2) when it cools. The use of separate de-gassing and expansion tanks considerably reduces the sizes of the tanks.
