Abstract

A vortex tube with heat transfer fins or blades divides the gas into warm and cold portions and metal tubing carries cold gas to a region where it takes heat from the surrounding water then into a thermal exchange region to receive a heat before the gas mixes with warm gas to form the breathing supply. A double walled chamber enclosing the vortex tube and the lower part of the metal tubing retains the heat and transfers it to the cold flow, and contains liquid chosen from a mixture of sea water, fresh water, and ethylene glycol, and has a control valve to ensure maximum heat transfer. The chamber is a moulded foam plastics material and the inner layer has high reflectivity for minimum heat loss.
