Abstract

The drive unit for a belt conveyor (1) consists of a belt (9) located on two pulleys (5, 6) which are located between the upper and lower belt section of the conveyor (7). Support rollers (13) below the contact area of drive and conveyor belts produce the required contact pressure to avoid slip between the two belts. The drive belt (9) has longitudinal grooves on its outside which are in close contact with air nozzles (15, 16) above each belt drum. When the air in the belt grooves is evacuated through the nozzles, a vacuum is created which is increases the contact pressure between the belts, preventing belt slip.
