Abstract
A heat-pipe or device for cooling the electrolyte of a battery is placed in each cell of the battery. It consists of a pipe or tube (9) closed at each end. One end of the tube (9) is immersed in the electrolyte (4) and the other end is cooled by ambient air (11). The tube is made of stainless steel and has fins (10, 12) at each end to facilitate heat transfer. The tube (9) contains a freon which vaporises at the end of the tube in the electrolyte and condenses at the end of the tube in air. The device may be fitted to the filler cap (8) of the cell (1). It facilitates heat dissipation and allows an increase in the capacity of the battery and in its life.
