Abstract

The pump has a shaft (10) which carries a series of impellers (12). Each impeller is followed by a diffusor (14) and a stator blade ring (16) and is spaced from the following impeller by a distance piece (18). Liquid flows through a space (20) in front of the impeller through throttling orifices (28, 22) formed between the casing and the distance piece and impeller respectively. The liquid is throttled so that the pressure in the space, balances the axial thrust on the impeller and keeps it centered. The orifices are arranged so that as the impeller and distance piece move axially on the shaft one orifice increases in cross section while the other decreases by an equal amount so that the pressure in the balance space remains constant.
