[Also in Divisions E1 and Fl] 11 The invention relates to a well-drilling turbine, the turbine being of the multi-stage type and there being a by-pass valve for adjusting the flow of working fluid through the turbine depending on the speed of the turbine shaft. The blades of the turbine are so shaped that the angle of discharge of the working fluid from the stator blades equals or approaches the angle at which the fluid enters the rotor blades when the rotor is stationary, the angle of discharge of the fluid from the stationary rotor being equal to or approaching the angle at which the fluid enters the following stator blades. The by-pass valve is built as a multi-stage valve. The multi-stage axial-flow turbine in Fig. 1 comprises a solid rotor shaft 5 on which are mounted rotor blade rows 4 which co-operate with stator blade rows 2 mounted within stator casing 3, the rotor being supported by means of bearings 6, 7. Turbine working fluid passes to the turbine through a duct 10 within casing 9 in which is disposed also a multi-stage by-pass valve 8, the valve opening to an outlet 11 in the casing 9 through which the working fluid may pass to the bore-hole. The by-pass valve comprises a series of frusto-conical rubber sleeves, each of which has a ball mounted therein, the sleeves expanding to allow flow of fluid therethrough in the event of the pressure exceeding a predetermined value. In a second embodiment the turbine rotor shaft is hollow and the by-pass valve is accommodated therein.
