Abstract
1,262,494. Axial-flow fans. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. June 12, 1969 [June 13, 1968], No.29806/69. Heading F1C. To reduce the noise created in an axial-flow fan, the inlet and outlet guide vanes 14, 18 thereof are spaced from the rotor blades 16 by a distance at least equal to the height S of the rotor blades, and the inlet passage turns through substantially 180 degrees and has at least one area change which may be gradual or of step-form to produce an increase or a decrease in the passage area in the direction of flow. Morover, the number of guide vanes 14 and the number of guide vanes 18 is preferably greater than the number of rotor blades 16. Equations for determining a suitable ratio of guide vanes to rotor blades, and the degree of noise attenuation produced by the area change, are given in the Specification.
