Abstract
876,615. Transverse-flow fans and pumps. FIRTH CLEVELAND Ltd. July 2, 1957 [Dec. 7, 1956 (3)], No. 44295/60. Divided out of 876,611. Class 110 (1). In a flow machine for inducing movement of a liquid or gas, of the kind comprising a cylindrical bladed rotor and means to guide fluid at least twice through the blades of the rotor in a direction transverse to the rotor axis, the guide means include a smooth concave wall within the rotor and held against rotation therewith, the wall extending the length of the rotor and between angularly spaced lines adjacent the inner envelope of the blades whereby the wall and the inner envelope define a chamber through which fluid flows between successive traversals of the blades. The two-stage machine shown comprises a cylindrical impeller having blades (not shown) extending between the circles 5 and 6. Two flow chambers 11, 12 are formed between the impeller and the concave walls of a stationary guide member 8. External guide members 13, 14 give rise to free cylindrical vortices as described in Specification 876,611. After leaving the first stage chamber 11, the fluid passes by way of a diffuser formed by walls 31, 32; laminar guide blades 35; duct 30; and aerofoil guide blades 36 to the secondstage chamber 12. Instead of being connected in series, the two sections of the machine may have independent inlets and outlets. The central guide member may be shaped to provide three independent flow chambers instead of two, each chamber containing stationary laminar and aerofoil stationary guide blades as described in Specification 876,612. Specification 876,621 also is referred to.
