Abstract

A central hydraulic piston which is kept in place by a return spring operates on a central crank assembly. The hydraulic fluid causes the crank assembly to move downwards or upwards, thus varying the stroke of the piston relative to the cylinder. The clearance volume beyond the piston is thus varied and the efficiency of the engine is maintained at low powers. The drive is taken through the crank mechanism to the output shaft by means of push rods connected to the pistons and a swash plate at the centre of the drive.
