Abstract
The engine has a cylinder (22) with a central dividing wall. The piston rod (25) carries two pistons (23) and is connected to the cross head (26) which slides in the guide (27). The engine works on the four stroke cycle and the timing of the valves and ignition is so arranged that each side of each piston it working on a different phase of the cycle. Thus the net load imposed on the cross head (26) is the difference between the force exerted by the power stroke and the forces required for the compression exhaust and suction strokes. In this way, the energy lost in friction is reduced and the efficiency of the engine increased.
