Abstract

Milk (by-)prods. from e.g. cows or sheep, or cheese and butter factories, are purified and up-graded to avoid the pollution of waters into which they might be discharged, and to obt. commercial prods. such as proteins, metabolites, etc. The milk prod., such as milk serum, from the storage tank is fed, opt. with pretreatment, into a membrane ultra-filter unit under pressure and in a state of high turbulence. The concentrate, contg. proteins and fatty matter which do not pass through the filter, passes to a tank. It can be stored as it is or treated by electrodialysis to separate different protein fractions such as lactalbumins, lactoglobulins and immunoglobulins etc. A simpler method is by spraying or freezedrying. The filtrate which permeates through the membrane is treated by a fermentation process. If filamentary moulds are used the prod. is a biomass which is rich in proteins. The withdrawn filtrate can be rejected in water or still may be further treated by reverse osmosis. The water finally sepd. is largely stripped of polluting materials and can be discharged into a stream without damage. It can however be further treated to render it chemically pure.
