Abstract

Emergency stop system, for gas-cooled nuclear reactors comprises pipes connected via valve to a reservoir of neutron-absorbing gas and opening into the reactor cooling circuit. Pref. where the reactor is helium-cooled, the neutron-absorbent gas, partic. Xe has a high sp. gr. relative to He and contains a gaseous B cpd. System does not require the provision of special cavities in the reactor core for the admission of neutron-absorbent material if the normal control rod system fails.
