Abstract

Rod of combustible poison for use in a nuclear reactor is described consisting of a metal tube which hermetically encloses a material capable of absorbing neutron consist of isotopes B10 and B11, shaped into a cylinder. Specifically the content of B10 reduced from its natural valve of 18.6 wt% to =8% by wt to furnish an absorption cross-section suitable for controlling the excess reactivity of a reactor at the start of the core life. The poison pref comprises 95 wt% B" cpds and 5% B'o cpds in the form of pellets, with one other element but without other diluent. At the end of its useful life, is (almost) incapable of capturing neutrons so that the useful life of the core is increased.
