Abstract

1519836 Shutting down pebble-bed reactors HOCHTEMPERATUR - REAKTORBAU GmbH 24 Oct 1975 [31 Oct 1974] 43746/75 Heading G6C In a pebble-bed reactor having some neutronabsorbing rods 9 insertable into the core 2 and some 10 insertable into the reflector 7 which surrounds the core, on occurrence of a fault a temporary shut-down is achieved by inserting some or all of the reflector rods 10. If the fault can be rectified quickly, the reactor is rendered critical again in a hot start by withdrawing the reflector rods. Otherwise the reactor is fully shut down by insertion of core rods 9. Some of the reflector and/or core rods are reserved for load control and regulation. The reflector cylinder 7 surrounding the core may be supplemented by a central reflector pillar passing through the core and also containing absorber rods.
