Abstract
A single shaft multi stage turbo compressor (2) is driven through a gear unit (3) with its output pinion (4) meshing with three gearwheels (5) rotating around it, equally spaced 120 deg. apart. Each of these gearwheels is mounted on a spindle in common with an intermediate pinion (7) meshing with a common driving gearwheel (6), the whole arrangement forming a reduction gear. In this way, the bearing (8) supporting the single shaft (1) of the turbo compressor receives little end thrust. A similar reduction gear can be incorporated between a flexible coupling on the output shaft of a drive motor and the shaft bearing, in the case of very small turbo compressors.
