1,000,877. Centrifugal and axial-flow blowers and compressors. CKD PRAHA, NARODNI PODNIK. March 20, 1963 [June 30, 1962], No. 11129/63. Heading F1C. [Also in Division F2] A rotary blower or compressor is driven by an electric motor through gearing built into the casing of the blower or compressor, the bearing at one or both ends of a rotor shaft of the blower or compressor being replaced by a pinion consituting a central gear wheel with single or double helical teeth and disposed in the centre of and engaging with three or more planet or idler pinions which engage with an internally toothed ring gear wheel. A compressor rotor 1, comprising three impellers, is connected by a flexible coupling 8 to the doublehelical sun gear 3 of an epicyclic step-up gearing. The electric driving motor 12 is connected through a rigid coupling 11 to a planet carrier 6 journalled in bearings 9, 10 and carrying three double-helical planet gears 4. Stationary helical ring gears 5 are each connected to the compressor casing by an elastic member 7a which may comprise three rubber blocks. The rotor 1 is journalled at its centre of gravity in a combined radial and thrust bearing 2 which may, as shown, be self-aligning. The support provided by the engagement of the sun gear 3 with the planet gears 4 obviates the need for a second bearing for the rotor 1. In another embodiment, an axial-flow blower or compressor is driven at opposite ends of its rotor shaft by two electric motors, each motor being connected to the respective end of the rotor shaft through helical epicyclic gearing, which may be of single-helical type, couplings 8, 11 being provided as in Fig. 2. At part-load operation, one motor only may be used, the other motor idling. The support provided by the two sets of epicyclic gearing enables both rotor shaft bearings to be omitted. In a further embodiment, comprising a centrifugal blower in which the rotor bearing adjacent the singlehelical step-up gearing is omitted, the gearing comprises a ring gear connected by a claw coupling to the electric motor and transmitting the drive to a pinion on the rotor shaft through three idler gears clustered around the pinion and carried by a stationary carrier.
