Abstract

647,127. Fans. WOODS OF COLCHESTER, Ltd., DALY, B. B., and BROWN, R. F. Dec. 5, 1945, No. 32911. [Class 110(i)] In an axial-flow fan having contrarotating impellers the driving torque in one direction of rotation is made substantially equal to that in the other, preferably by arranging that the two torques are reactions of one another. This may be achieved by drive from a single motor through differential gearing, for example through a driven planet-pinion carrier with planet pinions engaging a sun wheel on one impeller directly and a sun wheel on the other impeller through an idler gear, or by using two electric motors with identical fields and similar armatures connected in series; a simpler method is to make both armature and field of a motor freely rotatable and connect each to one of the impellers. In the embodiment shown, a squirrel-cage motor has its armature 5 carried on a shaft mounted in bearings in spiders 2 in a casing 1 and its field 9 mounted on bearings 6 on the shaft; the shaft carries impellers 14, 17 at its ends and the field structure carries impellers 15, 16 of opposite hand. The impellers are all similar, but the forms of the blades receiving rotating air may differ from the others; in a modification, the impellers 15, 16 are combined into one with large blades suitably designed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 399,619.
