Abstract

The fitting jig is supported on the floor of the dry dock on a movable bed on which two horizontal girders are supported on vertically adjustable rams. The girders can be moved sideways into the space between the rudder and the hull, with the far ends of the girders supported on further vertically adjustable rams. Movable trolleys are fitted to the girders to hold cradles which support the screw. The cradles can be tilted to ease the screw on and off the propeller shaft, using a demountable crane. The relative spacing of the parallel girders is adjustable to suit different sizes of ship and screw. The system provides a simple fitting process without having to remove the rudder.
