Abstract

1318264 Welding by fusion PRZEDSIEBIORSTWO PROJEKTOWO-TECHNOLOGIGICZNE PRZEMYSLU OKRETOWEGO 1 Sept 1970 41779/70 Heading B3R A method of welding an elongated stiffening rib to a ship's hull plate, comprises the following steps:- (i) the plate is aligned and secured, as by electromagnets 2, to a tiltable support table 1 provided with handling rollers 3, (ii) the table is tilted to a predetermined angle to the vertical, about a common axis of pivot bearings 12, by hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical jacks 11, (iii) the stiffening rib is pressed on to the plate by pressure pads 6 while being held against lateral movement by adjustable holders 5, and (iv) the stiffening rib is seam welded to the plate by welding heads 7 simultaneously along both sides of the rib, pressure and lateral restraint on the rib being progressively removed from the stiffening rib following welding thereof to the plate. The holders 5, pressure pads 6 and heads 7 are mounted on a vertically movable bridge 9 of a travelling gantry 4. The plate and ribs may be handled by conveyers 8 and a crane 10.
